Licensure Information

Applying for Kansas Licensure

It is recommended that everyone who completes the MAT applies for a Kansas teaching license. The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) requires all teachers to pass the PRAXIS content test. Specific requirements are found at PRAXIS Kansas Test Requirements.

• Elementary Licensure
  MAT Elementary (PK-6) students must pass the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects 7001.
• Secondary Licensure
  MAT Secondary Students (6-12) must pass the appropriate Praxis content test as a requirement of admission
• Unified Elementary Licensure MAT Elementary Unified students must pass the Praxis Elementary:Multiple Subjects 7001 and Special Education: Foundational Knowledge - 5355.

When you register for the Praxis tests, you will be asked where you want your test scores sent. Be sure to enter the KSU-Manhattan score recipient code (6334). If you are taking the test outside of Kansas, you will also want to have the scores sent to the Kansas State Department of Education (7270) as well as the state department of the state where you plan to teach.

Background Check

KSDE requires that all teachers complete their KBI/FBI background check. You can order fingerprint cards from the KSDE website. As an applicant for a Kansas teaching license, you should be aware that the application requests information on prior felonies and diversion agreements. Conviction of certain misdemeanors and all felonies may result in denial of licensure. Application for Initial Teaching License

After completing your Teacher Education program and Praxis test, submit an application to Kansas State Department of Education to get your Initial LIcense. The application is found in the Kansas Licensure Application System (KLAS)

Obtaining Licensure in Your State

Kansas is a part of National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) maintains reciprocal teacher certification agreements with all 50 states and US Territories.
