New Catalyst Team Member: Rusty Earl
Hello, my name is Rusty Earl. I am the new video production specialist for the college of education. I am very excited to be here and to offer my talents to the college. My job is to produce high quality video and audio for faculty, staff, students, and the public. I have an eye for the camera and I love to tell a good story. If you have an idea for a project that you want to discuss, feel free to drop by or email me for details. We have a beautiful facility and are capable of producing a variety of high quality videos and audio recordings.

My family and I recently moved from Mountain Home, Idaho, where I taught video production to junior high and high school students for the past three years. Prior to that I taught theatre and public speaking courses. I have been a freelance videographer for the past three years and recently directed my first independent feature film: www.sageridersthemovie.com

I graduated from Brigham Young University–Idaho in 2004 and earned my master's degree in technology education in 2007 from Walden University. I enjoy spending time with my family, filming, and riding my bike. I can be reached at 532-6049 or rearl@ksu.edu.

Scheduling Equipment for Finals Week, Intersession
and Spring 2012 Semester

Scheduling for Finals week: your weekly requests DO NOT continue into finals week, so please request what you need for your finals week time frame ASAP.

Scheduling for Intersession: If you have a class during intersession, please let us know ASAP as we will have to make special arrangements if your class starts between Christmas and New Year's.

Scheduling for Spring semester: The earlier you reserve, the better chance you have of getting your requests met!

Please return all Materials and Equipment that you have checked out by December 23 as we will be doing inventory during the break and we want to make sure everything is here and in good working order. If you need it back after the break, please put a note on it so that we can try to accommodate that request.

Contact Equipment Scheduling at coesched@ksu.edu or use our Online Request Form.

Changes Coming to the COE Website
The COE website will be undergoing a major upgrade when it switches over to the university's new Content Management System (CMS) template. Webmaster Mary Hammel will be contacting those responsible for content on the various pages on the site for updates before the new site goes live. The process of transferring content over to the new system will take some time, so the projected launch date of the new site is undetermined at this time. If you have questions, please contact Mary Hammel at mhammel@ksu.edu.

Software Update icon
Keeping Up with Software Updates
It is important that you keep your software up to date with the most current version. The following steps will ensure that you have the latest version of your software and correct errors that may occur with older versions.

Best Practice for installing Software Updates:

1. Quit all applications and turn off applications from auto-starting when computer starts up. Disconnect any FireWire or USB devices before updating. You can then re-connect the devices one by one after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Avoid performing any other operations on the computer while performing installs or updates.

2. Run "Disk Utility." This application is in the Utility folder, which is inside the Applications folder. Select your Mac HD, then click on Repair Disk Permissions. This may take between 5 to 40 minutes to complete.

3. Now do the Software Update. This is located under the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your computer screen. If there are more than four applications to update, select only four at a time to do the update. Click on Install the Software Updates.

Sftware Update window

Note: I never install all updates at once, especially if they require Restart of the computer for each update (the triangle to the left). This has been a debatable issue so do as you feel, just my opinion. Security Updates are usually big, so I would recommend doing them separately.

4. When the Software Updates are completed repeat step 2. You are done until the next Software Update. Please remember it is important to keep doing these updates.

If you need assistance please contact Dennis Devenney at 532-5926 or dennis@ksu.edu.

One more thing… Never Move Applications!
Please make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on the hard drive can lead to an incomplete or corrupted update and system.

Upgrades and Improvements to the Bluemont Hall
Wireless Networks

The Bluemont Hall wireless network is being upgraded. There will be newer wireless access points and additional access points in areas that have shown to have a weak signal. This upgrade should be in place by the first part of the Spring semester. We will be testing it in January and hope to have it running when school starts.

Telecom is also working on installing cellular access repeaters in the building. The time of implementation of this has not been designated, but we are hoping by mid-semester if not earlier. This would allow for cellular access with in the building with fewer dead spots.
