Required Qualifications:

  1. Earned doctorate in Education or related field, completed by August 2013
  2. Five years successful teaching experience in secondary schools.
  3. Successful teaching experience in post-secondary schools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Successful supervision of pre-service teachers.
  2. Successful experience providing professional development to K-12 teachers.
  3. Successful experience working with diverse populations.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Knowledge and/or experience using the professional development school (PDS) model.
  6. Demonstrated ability to effectively evaluate teaching. 
  7. Evidence of knowledge and ability to use common core and state standards and assessments in planning instruction.
  8. Experience with accreditation procedures (e.g., NCATE, KSDE).

Responsibilities:

  1. Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in English/Language Arts Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
  2. Coordinate the Secondary English/Language Arts Teacher Education Program.
  3. Collaborate with Professional Development School partners in the teacher preparation program.
  4. Participate in service activities at the local and state levels.
  5. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications

Mathematics Coach - Project MILeS

Goals of Project MILeS (Improving Mathematics Instruction through Lesson Study): The three-year professional development project combines two-week summer professional development programs, ongoing support during the school year and Japanese Lesson Study to improve teachers’ professional content knowledge in three local elementary schools.  This project aims to develop deeper mathematical content knowledge of elementary school teachers and guide teachers in exploring pedagogical concerns related to the implementation of the content standards and Standards for Mathematical Practice outlined in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Specifically, the goals of the project are to:

  1. Increase K-6 student achievement in mathematics in high needs schools, in particular to reduce the achievement gap of underrepresented populations.
  2. Increase the content knowledge and confidence of K-6 teachers, including special education teachers, in alignment to the CCSS-M.
  3. Improve the implementation of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP), especially in the area of discourse and mathematical argumentation, in the K-6 classrooms.
  4. Develop sustainable school-based teams of teachers that collaborate using the Lesson Study model for continued improvement of mathematical content and pedagogy.

Job Summary: The purpose of this position is to (1) assist in the development and delivery of intensive professional development in the area of mathematics pedagogy during a two week summer academy (Project MILeS) and during in-service workshops during the school year for K-6 teachers; (2) facilitate and organize the Japanese Lesson Study cycles at three elementary schools; (3) provide the K-6 teachers ongoing feedback on mathematics lesson delivery and collect observation data while in the classrooms; and (4) assist in the instruction of an elementary mathematics methods course and supervision of undergraduate pre-service teachers.

Job Description/Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively assist the Project Director in the planning, development, and delivery of the summer academy and follow-up in-service workshops during the school year.
  • Facilitate and organize 2-3 Japanese Lesson Study cycles for 15-20 teams of teachers at three elementary schools. Each cycle includes (1) an initial planning meeting, (2) observation of the lesson, debriefing, and revisions, and (3) re-teaching, debriefing, and reflection.
  • Plan and provide direct support to grade level teams with math instruction, resources, interventions, and data driven decision-making.
  • Collect and analyze data related to summer academy and follow-up activities during the 9-month school year.
  • Collaboratively assist the Project Director in the instruction of the elementary mathematics methods course (EDEL 463) and the supervision of elementary practicum and student teachers.

Required Qualifications        
Degree: Bachelors degree in Elementary Education
Experience:

  • Teaching experience in K-6th grade and a valid teaching license
  • Experience in the development and delivery of inquiry-based mathematics instruction
  • Experience in the development and delivery of professional development (i.e. staff development at the school district level, etc.)

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Recent graduate coursework and/or professional development
  • Knowledge of Common Core State Standards and standards-based curriculum
  • The ability to design effective lessons and interventions to support student needs
  • Deep and broad understanding of mathematical content
  • Knowledge in using and helping others use effective instructional and assessment practices informed by knowledge of mathematical learning

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Mathematics Education
  • The ability to analyze and interpret testing data and develop teaching strategies for participants to address deficiencies
  • Familiarity and experience conducting Japanese Lesson Study as professional development
  • Training and/or experience in differentiated instruction in a standards-based curriculum
  • Presentations at the state, regional and/or national level
